I hit the gym every day after work. Pack my gym bag the night before, get it into my car in the morning, and make sure I commit to leaving work by a certain time (if I stay at the office too late, it's easy to talk myself out of going to the gym) and spend a set amount of time at the gym (which is on my way home from work). It becomes routine. Also, if you find yourself at the gym at the same time every day, you will start to see the same faces over and over -- I have a lot of gym friends who I've gotten to know over the years, and they are great for accountability. They give me a hard time when I am not there!

Use a gym that's on your route home. I could never make myself go out again if I went home first.

Change into your gym clothes before you leave work and head right there. If I don't do that, I don't make it.

I'm guaranteed to hit the gym after work, if I change into my workout clothes AT WORK before I leave. It just takes away the choice between turning right to go home or driving straight ahead, since I'm already "ready". And I also really can't arrive home in my gym gear having NOT gone to the gym. Double whammy of certainty!

rather than pack a gym bag, my workout clothes go straight from the laundry to the trunk of my car. It's about time for a seasonal swap...out with the shorts, in with the yoga pants.

and I have several pairs of gym shoes that stay in the trunk of the car. No 'I forgot to pack my ____' excuses.

If you like group activities, try some classes. I have my favorite instructors and when I know they are teaching, I am more inclined to go.

you mentioned an injury - if Functional Fitness classes are offered at your gym, give that class a try. At the Y, the Functional Fitness teacher is very knowledgeable. We do so many different exercises. The class is never the same, and it's always a good workout.

For me I started with a reward system. So for every 3 weeks I worked out consistently, I would buy myself something like a mini manicure or new workout gear. The other thing that was effective was I used stickers on my calendar. So every time I worked out a sticker goes on. The visual worked really well for me. If by Wednesday I didn't have a sticker on calendar I would do something. Just to get 1.

Been trying the morning workouts and my leg seems to be doing quite well - now that the hardware is out and it's been a good six weeks since surgery it's been feeling better ever so slowly, and a warm up on the elliptical seems to be enough.

So, going to just stick with mornings I think! Much easier to be consistent!!

Well, I think I'm going to say the heck with it and try the mornings this week and see how that goes with the leg. I'll report back, but I just know that once I'm home I want to stay there, and gyms are just so busy right after work that's a major turn off for me.

I used to meet my PT at 7. I pretty much stopped at home to get ready and eat before my training session. If you get comfortable it will probably effect your wanting to go. If you wait too long, and still go, I have found my work out suffered. I simply got tired and wasn’t giving 100%. You definitely need to find your sweet spot.

COONSY, if you were not really fond of morning exercise,
there is hope that you are an evening exercise person! : )

If I had to exercise in the evening, I surely would do it immediately after work, taking gym/swim bag and all.
Once I got home, there is no hope to get me out again...

I agree with this one:
3. If you can go straight to the gym from work, that's best; just be sure to pack your gym bag the night before so you can just grab and go in the morning.

I am the same as you, i am thinking during the day what am i going to do when i get back home and when the time comes i am not in mood to do anything and i just sit and try to relax xD

1. I chose a variety of workouts that I actually enjoy, which has made a world of difference in my motivation. (So, I now have a consistent, set schedule:
Mon: Barre' fit / Tues: Zumba / Wed: Barre' fit / Thurs: Step class or run / Fri: Zumba / Sat: Cardio Funk followed by Barre' fit / Sun: hiking aka Active Rest Day.)

2. I track my workout first thing in the MORNING, (even though they're not until after 4pm) so i can see what my calorie needs are going to be. Once it's tracked, I really have to make it happen.

3. If you can go straight to the gym from work, that's best; just be sure to pack your gym bag the night before so you can just grab and go in the morning.

4. Think about how good you'll feel once you've worked out and showered and are now relaxed and feeling accomplished at the end of the day. Bed will feel fabulous and you should have great sleep and feel proud of yourself. I love that feeling.

I swim after work (except now because I am nursing an upper respiratory infection) and am really diligent about going. I put it on my calendar so that it is just part of my day. I also tell some of the people I regularly swim with that I am going, so that people expect me, and I make sure that I have a snack, so that I can't use being hungry as an excuse.

I go after work and thinking of the things that motivate me...
- It is part of my routine - I go on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and that's that. If I need to go shopping or do something else I do them after the gym or on another day.
- I have a peanut butter sandwich in the car on my way from work to the gym as my pre-workout snack. Once I've eaten that I feel obliged to go and do the exercise.
- I have recently had a new program which I really like and I am seeing definite gains. I look forward to going to the gym because I know it will be a challenge, but I also know it is do-able and that gives me a sense of accomplishment.
- I have some nice shower gel and shampoo and comfy clothes to change into afterwards. This draws a line under my working day and means I am relaxed and ready for family and domestic things when I get home.

Historically, I always preferred to work out in the mornings - not because I like mornings (hate them actually), but I preferred the simple fact that I was WAY more consistent and my day started off feeling somewhat "accomplished."

An injury nearly a year ago turned my life upside down this year, but I'm finally at a point where I need to be back at the gym and getting my fitness back (I was VERY fit before this).

Issue is, this injury takes a LOT of time to warm up. I don't want to strain things, and find it takes a couple hours of normal use before things really "wake up." This has me thinking that morning workouts may not be as productive anymore since I'd be spending a lot of time just trying to warm things up enough to get in an effective workout.

If I were to go after work, that wouldn't be an issue.

Besides packing a gym bag and snack and going straight to the gym after work, any other evening workout-ers who have tips or ideas on making sure you actually show up? Due to the crowd, I'd rather work out a little later, but I know my motivation after getting home and settled in tends to disappear....but thinking maybe some people here have found things that work for them!
